What is the Lancashire Healthy Schools Programme?

The Lancashire Healthy Schools Programme (LHSP) is a framework to support the achievement and maintainance of National Healthy Schools Status and to work with the Enhancement Model. It is a partnership developed between Lancashire County Council and North, Central and East Lancashire Primary Care Trusts.

The Healhty Schools Enhancement Model is designed to raise educational achievement and improve health and education outcomes by addressing national, regional, local and school priorities. The impact of which contributes to the completion of the SEF and the requirements of the Ofsted framework. The new LHSP Quality Standards reinforce this approach in more detail.

Consequently, this whole school approach will contribute to the improvment of the health and wellbeing of children and young people, members of the workforce, families and the wider community. The LHSP offers local accreditation within the national framework.

The LHSP offers thirteen Quality Standards which contribute to the needs analysis and guide practice in achieving Early Success Indicators on the way to embedding Meaningful Outcomes. Schools select the appropriate Topics and Themes, relevent to their local and school priorities, from the following:

  1. Healthy Eating
  2. Physical Activity
  3. Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Education (DATE) including Medicines
  4. Sex and Relationship Education
  5. Emotional Health and Wellbeing
  6. Safety Education
  7. PSHE Education and Citizenship
  8. Ethos
  9. Partnerships with Families and Local Communities
  10. Leadership, Management and Managing Change
  11. Curriculum Planning and Implementation
  12. Learning and Teaching
  13. School Health

It is recognised that the school is a key setting in which to improve both health and education outcomes. There is an excellent range of innovative and creative healthy schools work already being done in Lancashire.  Thousands of children and young people, their families and members of the wider community are participating in the life of their schools.

The LHSP has been an agent for change based upon strong partnership working which was officially recognised in 2007 when Lancashire County Council was awarded Beacon Status. This provides a strong foundation on which to progress this new way of working.
