This year the Lancashire Healthy Schools annual conference was organised in each of our three PCT footprints of North, Central and East Lancashire. More than 170 delegates attended one of the 3 workshops focusing on the Healthy Schools Enhancement Model and visited a Market place of partner agencies.

The Lancashire Healthy Schools Programme.

 Looking back…..

As our Transition Year draws to a close we wish to celebrate the achievements made through the old Lancashire Healthy Schools Programme.

Since the beginning:

  • 1585 Quality Marks have been awarded
  • 162 schools have achieved Lancashire Healthy School Status
  • 26 schools have joined the prestigious Lancashire School Flagship Status with the completion of 12 (13) Quality Marks
  • 603 (99%) of Lancashire schools have achieved National Healthy School Status

Looking forward…. 

During this Transition Year

  • The Healthy Schools Team have provided 80 Cluster meetings to support schools with the Annual Review
  • 237 schools have already started to complete their Annual Review online
  • 26 schools have completed their Annual Review
  • 30 schools have submitted their Annual Review 

Autumn 2010 

For schools that have held National Healthy School Status for 3 years or more, or have begun their Annual Review, you are invited to join the Annual Review Cluster meetings (one per district).

The letter of invitation and click form will be posted on the Schools Portal in early September.

Preston School Takes National Prize for School Dinners

The transformation of lunchtimes at Corpus Christi Catholic Sports College in Preston was highlighted last week at the Times Educational Supplement’s schools awards as the college clinched the Outstanding School Dinners award for its new restaurant and catering service – which has seen healthy lunch numbers rise from 20% to 85% in the last 2 years. British Food Fortnight 18 September to 3 October 2010

The ninth British Food Fortnight takes place from 18 September to 3 October 2010 during Harvest Festival, the traditional time for celebrating our food. We hope that you enjoy putting the Ooo back into food during British Food Fortnight!

Health Works Awards - Central Lancashire

Employees are one of the most valuable assets to any college and creating a healthy workplace will bring benefits to any type of business.  Healthy people make happy people.  Health Works is a FREE local workplace health scheme which encourages making positive changes in the workplace, tackling issues such as smoking, healthy eating, positive mental health and physical exercise. 2011 Speaker's School Council Awards

You can now get involved in the Speaker's School Council Awards for 2011.

Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon John Bercow MP, wishes to acknowledge and recognise the most inspiring achievements of school councils across the country.

Global Children’s Challenge

This year’s Global Children’s Challenge will be host to 100,000 primary school children from over 80 countries around the world, all walking their way to a healthier future. Starting on the 29th September 2010 and running for 8 weeks (until the 17th November 2010), children will record their daily activity levels using a GCC pedometer (provided to the classes at no cost). Wipe Out Waste Awards 2010

|

Students from any school in the country are invited to present their ideas for reducing waste to help save resources and our environment. Their ideas will be judged by a panel of green dragons - some of the Biggest names in climate change.

The winning teams and their teacher(s) will be asked to be a part of taking their WOW idea into production nationwide. The winning school will have a complimentary powerPerfector unit installed by the awards sponsor, enabling the school to potentially reduce their energy usage by up to 20% !

FUNDING FOR COOKING CLUBS

The School Food Trust are inviting Lancashire schools to join Let’s Get Cooking.

This is a five-year, Lottery-funded programme to set up a national network, initially of 5,000 school-based cooking clubs for children and their families. Let's Get Cooking involves running cooking clubs to teach new cooking skills to children, families and the wider community and to hold food activities at school and community events. They provide lots of ideas and resources to help you do this and offer a flexible approach.

 

Your school is invited to apply but places are limited, so act quickly! An invitation pack will be sent to each Head Teacher to arrive in school on the week of 19 April. Please make sure you look out for this as all the sign up information that you need will be inside.

School Chef of the Year 2010

|

Our local Lancashire heats were held at Preston College, where we had the use of their training kitchen, on Wednesday the 4th November.

The candidates had £1.25 to spend and had to produce a main course and a sweet, suitable for primary school children within an hour and a half. Their recipes had to be able to be replicated in large scale, and had to adhere with the Governments food based standards for school food.
